Nanao Kobayashi is a contemporary artist born in Tokyo. She delves into phenomena that exist beyond human perception and logic, capturing them as movements of particles. Her artistic practice intricately involves the creation of embroidery-like sculptures and installations that engage with natural phenomena. These works, meticulously constructed from interconnected hollow structural materials, proliferate infinitely from minimal units, rendering the imperceptible into tangible patterns and occurrences. Through this process, Kobayashi offers a vision of the world’s essential nature that transcends the past and the future.
In her performance under the moniker “FATHER,” Kobayashi creates an immersive space using drums and electronic instruments. These performances embody music as a primal “expression of life” while simultaneously establishing a reciprocal dialogue with her embroidered works, tracing the contours of the invisible realm.
Kobayashi’s major exhibitions include solo exhibition “Throw the Night” (2020, Yutaka Kikutake Gallery, Tokyo) and solo exhibition “COMA SPACE” (2023, Kondaya Genbei, Kyoto), and a group exhibition “Lining Revealed – A Journey Through Folk Wisdom and Contemporary Vision”(2025, CHAT, Hong Kong). Her work has also gained international recognition through commission works and performances at cultural institutions in Japan and abroad, including M+.

東京生まれ、現代アーティスト。人間の知覚やロジックでは認識できない領域での現象を、粒子の動きとして捉え、作品制作を行っている。中空構造の素材を結び合わせて作られた最小単位が無限に増殖することで生まれる刺繍的な彫刻作品や、自然現象との相互作用を生み出すインスタレーションは、知覚した世界を物質的なパターン / 現象として顕現させ、過去と未来に通じる本質的な世界のあり方を提示する。
また、「FATHER」名義で行われる、ドラムや電子楽器を用いて空間を作り上げるパフォーマンスでは、音楽は生命の表現であるという根源的な性質を志向しながら、不可視な領域に輪郭を与える刺繍的な作品群と相互関係を構築する。
近年の活動として、個展「夜を飛ばす」（2020年、東京・Yutaka Kikutake Gallery）、個展「眠るソラ/COMA SPACE」（2023年、京都・「誉田屋源兵衛」）、グループ展「Lining Revealed – A Journey Through Folk Wisdom and Contemporary Vision」（2025年、香港・CHAT）、M+をはじめとする国内外での文化施設でのライブパフォーマンスなど。
